Healthy Relationships, Toxic Relationships & Domestic Violence Insight 


General Objectives: 


1. Understanding Definitions:  

  • Differentiate between healthy and toxic relationships (how you relate to one another:relationship dynamic). 

  • Define domestic violence and its various forms (physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, financial). 


2. Recognizing Signs and Patterns:  

  • Identify signs and behaviors characteristic of healthy relationships.

  • Recognize warning signs and patterns of toxic relationships and domestic violence. 

3. Developing Skills: 

  • Build effective communication skills for healthy relationship dynamics. 

  • Learn strategies for setting and respecting boundaries. 


4. Promoting Awareness and Prevention: 

  • Increase awareness about the impact of toxic relationships and domestic violence on individuals and communities. 

  • Promote resources and strategies for prevention and intervention. 


Specific Objectives: 


1. Healthy Relationships: 


Definition and Characteristics: 

  • Understand key aspects of a healthy relationship (trust, respect, communication, equality). 

  • Discuss the importance of mutual support and individual growth within a relationship. 

Communication Skills: 

  • Develop skills for open and honest communication. 

  • Practice active listening and empathy. 

Conflict Resolution: 

  • Learn healthy conflict resolution strategies. 

  • Recognize the importance of compromise and understanding in resolving disagreements. 


2. Toxic Relationships: 


Identification and Impact: 

Identify behaviors and patterns that signify a toxic relationship (manipulation, control, jealousy, isolation). 

Understand the emotional and psychological impact of toxic relationships on individuals. 


Self-Assessment: 

  • Encourage self-assessment to recognize personal experiences with toxic behaviors. 

  • Discuss the importance of self-worth and self-care in addressing toxic relationships. 

Setting Boundaries: 

  • Learn techniques for setting healthy boundaries. 

  • Understand the importance of maintaining personal space and independence. 


3. Domestic Violence: 


Forms and Dynamics: 

  • Define and differentiate between the various forms of domestic violence (physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, financial). 

  • Understand the cycle of abuse and its psychological impact on victims. 

Support and Resources: 

  • Identify resources and support systems available for victims of domestic violence (hotlines, shelters, counseling services). 

  • Discuss the importance of seeking help and the steps to take if experiencing domestic violence. 

Intervention and Prevention: 

  • Learn strategies for intervening and supporting others who may be experiencing domestic violence. 

  • Promote awareness campaigns and community involvement in preventing domestic violence. Reflection: 

Action Planning: 

  • Develop personal action plans for fostering healthy relationships and addressing toxic behaviors. 

  • Identify specific steps participants can take to support friends and family experiencing domestic violence.

Ashley Shelley, LPC-MHSP, founder of Melanin and Mindfulness, LLC., is a licensed private practice therapist in Nashville, Tn. Ashley works with adult clients as well as early childhood ages 3-9 years old.


She works to consistently provide quality and effective therapeutic services that encourage mindful living, meaningful, and sustainably progressive outcomes. Promoting engagement in mental health practices within minority communities has been one of her primary focuses.


Ashley is also a certified yoga instructor and gifted lightseer/tarot reader. Private yoga, guided meditation,and tarot sessions are a few of her additional therapeutic offerings.
